After figuring that since I’m in the computer / IT related industry, I finally purchased my own personal laptop. All these while I’ve been mainly using the company’s laptop and finally decided I should have one nice one for myself to start storing my music, pictures, videos and porn :p. My first self purchased laptop.
After much sorting and comparing I’ve finally decided to go for the DELL XPS M1330 which was just launched recently this year. DELL decided to change their boring and standardized outlook on laptops recently and have done some daring and interesting design changes to their laptops to capture a bigger market segment. DELL came out with all sort of colors under the rainbow for their new INSPIRON and XPS line. Glad they did it finally and the DELL XPS M1330 is one beauty.
Comparing the specs, looks and (most definitely) price against the Sony Vaio, the DELL’s version of slim and light definately won hands down for me.

My DELLperiance.
The standard DELL laptop takes about 3-4 weeks to deliver from the time it has been ordered. So reckoning that I would be back from my cruising onboard the ship, I ordered the laptop early. Waiting patiently to come back to the open arms of my brand spanking new laptop, I was disappointed when I came back to nothing. Slightly agitated, I called DELL and they say that there is a worldwide shortage on the 13.3″ LCD screens. Being the patient person I am… I agreed on the extended late delivery of another 3-4 weeks. (I was going on a 2 week backpacking trip anyways)
This time round, after coming back from my long deservered backpacking trip… I finally get to see the new DELL box at my doorstep.

All excited like a 5-year old kid opening his transformer toy during christmas, I opened up the box ready to get the full Vista experiance that has been going around. Guess what… the FREAKING laptop didn’t turn on!!! At first, thinking maybe there is some special switch or there could be something I left out reading in the manual, I’ve spend the next 2 hours or so trying to figure what’s up with this laptop. Finally giving up. I called DELL XPS hotline.
As pissed as I was about the whole situation and after all the waiting for the brand new laptop, I spoke politely to the technical assistant. He assisted me professionally and was trying to troubleshoot what was actually wrong with the laptop. After about 30 minutes of nothing-ness, he finally surrenderred and said a technical staff would drop-by to check on the laptop in another 2 days. (‘@!#$%#@^‘ << that’s the curse that was going on in my head at that moment.)
FINE! I waited another 2 days and I’ve got a call in the morning from DELL that goes like this :
DELL : G’morning. I’m … (blah blah blah much practiced standard telemarketers greeting)
Ben : Morning. Ben speaking… (bla bla bla)
DELL : I’m sorry to inform you there has been a DELAY because the spareparts has yet to arrive to our office hence our technicians are unable to come today as mentioned.
That pretty much was end of the story… I had to wait again and this time round there is no definate answer on when would I be able to get the VISTAperiance. I WAS SERIOUSLY PISSED NOW. I reckon the Dalai Lama himself would be driving up to the DELL production plant demanding a refund or a FREE server or something. This time round, no time frame was given except the answer of ‘we would call you when it arrives’… Anyways, long story short. All tired and ready to give up hope on DELL and their services, I received a call the next day and the technician came checked and change the whole motherboard. Everything seems to work fine there after… THE END.
*Disclaimer: This post is not to diss DELL but to tell about my DELLperiance. Frankly, I have to admit the DELL XPS service is fast, polite and good (comparatively by Malaysian standards) and perhaps it’s just that ’shit happens’ that my laptop which is suppose to be brand new is *kaput* upon arrival.
